Well this week is going to be a short one as it has been a short week! Here in Brazil we are at the beginning of a 6 day holiday, Thursday and Tuesday are holidays so the Brazilian way of thinking says, "Well what's the point in working Friday and Monday then?"
This week I have been in and out of my school, continuing to get kids playing full TAG games ready for the festivals in two weeks and giving new children a taste of rugby. The School I visited is a school for the children of those working within an enormous sugar cane plant / factory and the school was on the factory grounds itself. It was like turning up in Brazil all over again, feeling like a celebrity! The kids all wanted hugs and high fives' trying out snippets of English with me. Over all it was great, with over 100 children taking part and getting their hands on the ball. One issue I did have is making them understand the difference between the English and our cousins across the Atlantic as they all thought I was American. I explained that calling me American was like me calling them Argentinean . . . needless to say they didn't call me American again!
The structure was simply fun fun fun, playing tagging games, getting the ball passed backwards and integrating respect for teachers, referees and one another into the session.
It was great to get out and about, seeing how other kids would react to the game, and when I return to the UK in just a few weeks, and a new coach comes out in January, I will make sure that this school and many more get more contact time. The word is spreading Harlequins, and the word is Rugby!
