NEC Harlequins' Heineken Cup hopes suffered a serious setback at Montferrand, and the French team, winners of last season's Shield, must now be amongst the favourites for this title too.
Montferrand scored four tries - from Lazerges, Magne, Marlu, and Troncon. All of NEC Harlequins' points came from the boot of the recently recovered John Schuster. With three penalty goals, Schuster kept Quins' hopes alive in the first half, but in the second half, and with the arrival on the field of giant former France lock, Olivier Merle, there was little doubt, that before a home crowd of 10,000, Montferrand had the game in the bag. Despite the fact that NEC Harlequins were tireless in defence Montferrand's strength in attack was to prove just too much. Montferrand's win places them top of Pool 5 with three wins from four games.
