Last Friday's loss to Leeds Tykes in the Powergen Cup hurt. True we did not play anywhere near as well as we had done the previous Saturday against Northampton, although both the weather conditions and the opposition did not allow us to do so, but it has to be said that the rub of the green did not go our way.
To have a penalty try given against you as early as the fourth minute, to have one and possibly two tries disallowed is unfortunate to say the least. Having said that we still had opportunities to get back into the game which we did not take. Our line out was a little disappointing in the last quarter of the game, and although we dominated the scrum we did not get any benefit from this area of the game.
But, and it is a big but, two of the most useless words in sport are if only! The game against Leeds is now history and we have to learn from it and move onto the next challenge which is Bath this Saturday afternoon, kick off 2.15pm at the Recreation Ground.
There were no injuries picked up against Leeds, with Pat Sanderson recovering from the kick he took on his calf which means that with the continued exceptions of Ace Tiatia and George Harder Mark Evans has been able to pick from a full strength squad. The only change to the starting XV will see Gavin Duffy come in at full back ahead of Josh Taumalolo.
Both George and Ace are still working hard on their rehabilitation from injury, and in Ace's case particularly we are being a little cautious having seen the reoccurrence of his injury shortly before we were due to play Leeds three weeks ago, at a time when all the signs indicated that he was 100% fit.
We are expecting a huge confrontation at the set piece this Saturday afternoon, and as a result of that our training this week has concentrated on these areas. Bath are a very efficient unit coached by former Queensland Reds coach John Connelly, and they have a very good kicking game orchestrated by Ollie Barclay and Matt Perry. It will be a fascinating battle.
Away from Saturday's action, next Tuesday our 2nd XV will take on the Army at The Stoop, kick off 7pm looking to continue their unbeaten run. This will be the first time that our 2nd XV have taken on the Army away from Aldershot.
And of course on Saturday morning there is the Rugby World Cup Final between England and Australia. With the entire Southern Hemisphere getting together in a concerted effort to call England boring, let us hope that Clive Woodward and Martin Johnson ignore these sour grapes and make sure that England go onto the pitch on Saturday and win. It does not matter how, a Cup Final is remembered for its winners, there are no points for artistic impression.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Will and Jason all the very best in what is sure to be a very close encounter, and we all look forward to seeing the at The Stoop very soon.
Here's looking forward to a very exciting Saturday of rugby.
