NEC Harlequins 2nd XV went down by 28 -10 at Kingsholm last night, their first defeat of the season. With seven players who had started the Parker pen Challenge Cup game against Cetransa El Salvador on Saturday in the squad, Ben Wills starting on the wing, and Mike Brown making his debut at full back it was a good effort from the players involved. Late cry offs due to injury and illness by Matt Moore, Rob Jewell, Tom Williams and Tom Allen did not help the cause.
A good start led to an early penalty by Adrian Jarvis which put the 2nd Xv up by 3 points to nil. A second opportunity in the ninth minute was missed.
Two tries from a solid Gloucester team before half time gave the home side a 10 -3 advantage at half time. This was increased to 13 - 3 early in the second half with a penalty.
In the 54 minute Scott Bemand, now playing on the wing, scored a try from a Adrian Jarvis cross field kick that was dropped by the Gloucester wing, the try was converted and this brought the score back to 13- 10. Shortly after this a controversial decision by the referee/touch judge who adjudged incorrectly that a kick from inside our own 22 had actually been taken from outside the 22 led to Gloucester scoring a third try and taking a decisive 20 - 10 lead.
A further penalty and try led to a final score line of 28-10 which did little to flatter the efforts of the team, particularly the likes of Andy Reay, Laurent Gomez, James Hayter, Karl Rudzki, Luke Sherriff, Kai Horstmann and Roy Winters.
The 2nd XV will get the opportunity to get back to winning ways at The Stoop on Monday evening when they face Saracens, KO 7.30pm
