On Saturday 28th September, the NEC Harlequins Under 19's went down for the second week running, 34-0 against a Leeds side set on overturning their defeat earlier in the season.
With average conditions and scattered rain showers, Quins started the stronger side, good ball retention and platform setting leading to a number of chances created, but for the final pass to fall by the wayside. Quins soon got the early chance with a shot at goal, only for the ball to sail wide. With Leeds under enormous pressure, they conceded yet another penalty, but for the ball to again sail wide. Quins continued to pressure Leeds, whose defence was outstanding to prevent the visitors from crossing the line. Quins soon lost powerful winger Nd Monye to a hamstring injury, and this was the 1st in a long line of injury forced replacements.
The tide then turned. From the base of the scrum, Leeds executed to perfection an 8-9-14, and with both the 8 and scrum half making far more ground than they should have, the right winger was on hand to finish the move, converted try under the posts. Leeds soon added further points through a well worked pressure driven try, after the Quins defence had been sucked in all over. Half time: 14-0.
After the break, Quins came out to replicate the positive efforts from the 1st half, and despite making some success, Leeds hit out stronger. After some very physical exchanges, the scoring deadlock was broken as pressure told on the Quins line and Leeds crossed in the corner for the 3rd. Soon after, Leeds showed Quins how to run at a defensive line, with the No. 10 hitting the line hard at pace, and taking several defenders with him on the way to the line. Try time. Having defended for so much of the game, Quins were shattered on their feet towards the end, and conceded a soft try for Leeds to cap off a fine performance. The difference between the two side... Leeds took their chances, Quins did not!
There is a 6 week mid season break now and the Quins Under 19s will be regrouping to work on fitness levels, as well as back to basics skills to come back in the second half of the season to build and improve on a reasonably successful 1st half.
