The Harlequin Ladies' winning steak came to an abrupt end in Sunday's friendly against Old Albanian Saints.
Quins received the kick-off, but OA's were quick on the chase to close down Harlequins' space. It was to be a scrappy start to the game with neither team putting together any decent phases of play and many errors being made.
As both teams settled into the game, OA's showed the strength of their rucking game, making it difficult for Quins to get clean ball. The home team, on the other hand, were holding onto possession well, and were able to break through the Quins defensive line and score after 15 minutes.
Harlequins finally started to play more to their own strengths, with improved support play helping to keep the ball out of contact. It was from this platform, that Dani Knight at fly-half was able to score the first try for Quins.
The second half saw potent assaults from OA's who were quick to run in their second try. Quins picked up their defence but the home team were able to play a patient game, waiting for the opening that came when Quins conceded a penalty just five metres out. OA's dived to the line to secure their 12 point lead.
Far from letting their heads go down, Quins launched a strong counter-attack, committing greater numbers into the rucks and finally putting OA's under pressure. When OA's pulled down the driving maul that was taking Quins to their try line, the referee awarded the visitors a penalty try.
Only minutes remained, and Quins maintained their attack right up until the final whistle, but it was not to be their day. It was a tough game, particularly for those players having their first run-out in the famous multi-coloured jersey, and those trying out new positions. Quins will need to learn from Sunday's mistakes and with the return of a number of injured players, build on the positive aspects of the game ready to face Clifton 2's away in next week's league fixture.
