Quins held onto a narrow victory at the Stoop on Friday evening against Irish side Connacht in their pre-season friendly.
A young developing squad from Harlequins fought it out against a battling Connacht side to win by just one point 15 - 14.
It was a tentative start by the young squad and Connacht took the lead after seven minutes through a penalty by fly half Miah Nikora, but it was Quins who went across the try line first. England U20's star George Lowe won the chase to a dainty grubber kick from new signing Rory Clegg, to touch down underneath the posts. Clegg converted to add the extra two points.
Connacht's fly half slotted through another penalty for the away team after 20 minutes but Clegg responded and increased the deficit by another 3 points, when the home side were awarded a penalty after Connacht were penalised for not binding in the scrum.
Connacht continued to pressure Quins and it was some last ditch tackles that forced Connacht to knock on just before the try line. However, it was a reversal of fortunes and this time Mark Lambert was penalised for pulling down the scrum. Miah Nikora converted the penalty to make it 10 - 9. Just before the half time whistle Connacht threw away the chance to take the lead by missing a penalty, after George Lowe was penalised for not releasing on the floor.
Rory Clegg, sealed off his debut for Quins by scoring a try just after the break. A Harlequin counter attack saw Tosh Masson break down the right hand side, and quick recycling of the ball, saw Clegg sell a beautiful dummy that fooled the Connacht defensive line to put him through to score.15 - 9.
Connacht did not lie down and came back with a vengeance and a try came from the extensive pressure at the second attempt, since their initial break was foiled yards from the line.
The last quarter saw both teams make a number of mistakes and handling errors as they both pushed for victory. But neither side's defence could be broken and Quins sealed the win by just one point.
