The gates at the Stoop opened at 10.30am on Saturday (30th April) for the finals of the ever popular Richmond & Twickenham Times Cup - or the 'RATT Cup' as it's affectionately known.
The tournament, which acts as a curtain raiser for NEC Harlequins first team, is now in its third year of sponsorship from the local newspaper. First round matches were played in the annual competition back in September of last year, so for many youngsters it was a long journey in reaching the prestigious finals at the weekend.
As the sun shone and with over 1,500 spectators in attendance, the tension of Quins imminent battle against Sale Sharks in the Zurich Premiership was almost forgotten as teams from Surrey, Hampshire, Middlesex, Berkshire, Kent and Sussex graced the hallowed Stoop pitch.
Over 60 associated junior rugby clubs throughout the South East took part in this season's competition, with 16 making it through to the finals. A new age group was added to the tournament this year, which meant that five age groups from Under 7's through to Under 11's were battling it out for the silverware up for grabs.
The matches were once again officiated by qualified referees from Teddington RFC. The standard of play was quite breathtaking at times, with the levels of sportsmanship shown by players and coaches being exemplary throughout.
Quins Community Team would like to extend their thanks to all their partners who help make the matchday programme so successful, including the Richmond & Twickenham Times newspaper, School Governors One Stop Shop and Guy Salmon the local Land Rover dealership in Thames Ditton.
Special thanks also to Paul Mortimer, editor of the Richmond & Twickenham Times, and local MP Vincent Cable for awarding the prizes on Saturday along with NEC Harlequins Managing Director, Tony Copsey.
