NEC Harlequins scored seven tries in a 43-20 victory over Oxford University at Iffley Road last night (Monday 31st October). Returning from shoulder and groin injuries respectively, Will Greenwood and George Harder both got their names on the score-sheet.
Indeed, it was Greenwood who opened the scoring with the first try of the match after just five minutes. From a quickly taken free-kick, the England centre broke through the defence before touching down. Mike Brown missed the conversion, but minutes later was given a run-in under the posts by Greenwood and added the two extra points from the conversion to put Quins into a 12-point lead.
Oxford then enjoyed their best spell of the half with fly half Jon Fennell converting a penalty, before flanker Doug Abbott scored a try after being driven over from a lineout close to the Quins line. Despite the conversion being missed, the deficit between the two sides was down to just four points (8-12).
However, Quins hit back almost straight away when Harder was given an unopposed run-in for the visitors third try of the night, which Brown converted. Just before the interval, James Inglis finished off a lineout move deep in the Oxford twenty-two and with Brown adding the two points from the conversion, it meant Quins led 26-8 at the halfway stage.
Just two minutes after the restart and Quins added to their tally once again. From a lineout deep in the home sides twenty-two, a catch and drive from the forwards resulted in Tom Guest claiming the touchdown. Just three minutes later and some slick handling from the visitors ended with Charlie Amesbury scoring in the left hand corner. Despite both scores being unconverted, Quins had a commanding 28-point lead (36-8).
Winger Jonan Boto capitalised on an overlap created down the right flank to score Oxford's second try of the night, only for Tom Williams to respond with an excellent individual score, which he also converted. Full back Anthony Knox claimed a consolation try for Oxford in the final play of the game, but by then Quins had secured their victory.
Final score, 20-43.
