NEC Harlequins defeated the Cornish Pirates by 50-6 in their National Division One encounter at the Stoop, scoring five tries in the final quarter to come away with the maximum five points. Andrew Mehrtens laid the foundations with five penalties to put the home side 15-6 in front just after half-time, before Quins cut loose in the last 20 minutes to record an emphatic victory.
Mehrtens first penalty of the afternoon opened the scoring with four minutes on the clock, though the Pirates fly half Tom Barlow responded in similar fashion two minutes later. Some illegal use of the boot at a ruck by one of the Pirates forwards meant a penalty decision was reversed in Quins favour and allowed Mehrtens to put the home side back into a three-point lead on 13 minutes.
It was an advantage he doubled 14 minutes before the interval by converting his third penalty of the half, only for Barlow to make the score 9-6 when Quins were penalised for hands in the ruck straight from the restart. Two further penalties from Mehrtens followed either side of half-time that put Quins into a two score lead (15-6). Barlow had the opportunity to cut the deficit once again, but saw his penalty attempt come back off the post on 46 minutes.
From then on Quins dominated proceedings, but had to wait until the start of the final quarter before scoring the opening try of the match. No sooner had Pirates replacement lock forward Heino Senekal come on, then he found himself back on the touchline after been sent to the sin-bin for killing the ball, while Mehrtens opted to kick the resulting penalty into touch five metres from the Pirates line.
Quins won possession at the lineout and Luke Sherriff was driven over for the five points. Mehrtens added the two extra points from the conversion to put the home side 22-6 in front. Six minutes later and Quins numerical advantage up front led to their second try, as the pack drove their opposite numbers back over their own line from a five-metre scrum, allowing Nick Easter to claim the touchdown. Two further points from Mehrtens put the home side into a 23-point lead (29-6).
Ten minutes from time and a quickly taken penalty from Mehrtens resulted in a high cross-field kick out to the right wing. Ugo Monye gathered and expertly fed the ball inside to Gavin Duffy, who in turn provided Tom Williams with the scoring pass in a beautifully executed try. A third conversion from Mehrtens stretched Quins advantage to 30 points (36-6).
The bonus point try followed three minutes later, as excellent work from Williams led to the full back releasing Monye on the right flank. The winger chipped ahead and was the first to win the race to the loose ball over the Pirates try line. Mehrtens took his personal tally for the match to 23 points by converting the score.
Adrian Jarvis replaced Mehrtens soon after the restart and was instrumental in setting up Quins fifth and final try right at the death. An excellent run from the fly half took play deep into the Pirates twenty-two, before he gave Will Greenwood a simple run-in from close range.
A successful conversion from Jarvis was immediately followed by the final whistle to complete a thoroughly satisfying afternoon for Quins, with the game being played in front of a record attendance in National Division One.
Final score, 50-6.
