NEC Harlequins recorded their first victory of 2005 and did it in emphatic style, with a 38-9 win over Gloucester in the Zurich Premiership at the Stoop. Despite having Ace Tiatia sent off six minutes before half-time, the home side scored 30 unanswered points whilst being a man down to come away with the maximum five points.
Quins got off to a flying start as Jeremy Staunton converted a penalty with just two minutes on the clock, before the opening try was scored nine minutes later after Simon Maling won a Gloucester lineout deep in the visitors twenty-two. Staunton was held-up short of the line but with quick ball materialising, Tom Williams was given the space he needed to burrow over in the right hand corner. Staunton missed the conversion from wide out, but Quins had an eight-point lead.
Back came Gloucester and two penalties from centre Henry Paul cut the deficit to just two points (8-6) at the end of the first quarter. Then came Tiatia's moment of madness, as the Quins hooker threw a punch at Gloucester prop Terry Sigley that left referee Ashley Rowden with little option but to show him the red card. Paul converted the resulting penalty that put the visitors in front for the first and only time in the match (9-8).
However, two further penalties from Staunton put Quins back into the lead at the interval (14-9). It was the home side who made the brighter start to the second half and Staunton's fourth penalty of the afternoon put Quins into a two-score advantage (17-9), though the crucial try of the contest came as the game entered the final quarter.
Tony Diprose fed Mike Worsley out on the right flank and the prop held-off two defenders before giving Simon Keogh the scoring pass, as the winger had an unopposed run to the line. Staunton added the two extra points on offer to stretch Quins lead to 16 (24-9).
Gloucester looked to hit back straight from the restart and recycled possession through a number of phases to take play into Quins twenty-two. However, with the overlap created James Simpson-Daniel had his pass brilliantly intercepted by Keogh, who comfortably had the pace to go the length of the pitch and touchdown under the posts for his second try in the space of four minutes. Staunton made no mistake with the simple conversion to make the score 31-9.
The visitors looked as if they were going to prevent Quins from claiming the bonus point, but in the fourth minute of injury time replacement James Hayter rounded off an excellent afternoon for the home side. The hooker was driven over by the rest of the pack from a lineout five metres from the Gloucester line. Staunton once again found the target with the conversion to finish the scoring and to take his personal tally up to 18 points.
Final score, 38-9.
