NEC Harlequins suffered a crushing 58-13 defeat away to Castres Olympique at the Stade Pierre Antoine in the Heineken Cup. Trailing only by three points (11-8) ten minutes after half-time, the visitors conceded seven tries in the time that remained to end up losing their fourth match out of five in the tournament this season, as well as recording their heaviest defeat in the history of the competition.
Andy Dunne opened the scoring with a penalty that gave Quins a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter. However, Castres began to take control of proceedings and two penalties from centre Laurent Marticorena along with the opening try of the match from flanker Rodrigo Capo Ortega combined to give the hosts an eight-point lead at half-time (11-3).
A well taken try by Gavin Duffy soon after the restart put Quins back in contention as it cut the deficit to just three points, but the visitors defence was then frequently breached once the game reached the 50 minute mark. Hooker Remi Vigneaux went over for Castres second try of the match, with scores from scrum half Alexandre Albouy and replacement Romain Froment following in quick succession.
Capo Ortega collected his second try of the afternoon, before captain Luke Sherriff pulled one back for Quins. The home side then continued to pressure the Quins defence, which led to Froment registering his second try of the contest and he was soon joined on the score-sheet by fellow back row forward Guillaume Bernad.
In the closing stages, winger Ugo Mola intercepted and strolled over the line to complete the rout, while Marticorena converted six of the eight tries to finish the game with a personal tally of 18 points.
Final score, 58-13.
