For the second week running NEC Harlequins produced an excellent performance in the Guinness A League, comprehensively defeating London Irish by 45-7 at Sunbury last night (Monday 26th September). Quins scored six tries in the opening 40 minutes to lead 38-0 at half-time, with Mike Brown claiming a hat-trick and Chris Robshaw scoring twice.
In his first game back since breaking a hand in pre-season, Brown opened the scoring from Quins first meaningful attack after just three minutes. Good driving play from the forwards led to Charlie Amesbury coming off the left wing and breaking through the Irish defence, with Brown gratefully accepting the scoring pass to touchdown by the posts. Adrian Jarvis made no mistake with the conversion to put Quins into a seven point lead.
11 minutes later and Robshaw finished off a move he started to double Quins advantage. The flanker stole possession from an Irish lineout and fed Nick Easter, who powered his way through the heart of the Irish defence. Jarvis carried play forward and a lovely offload to Robshaw gave him an unopposed run-in for the try, with Jarvis once again converting.
Easter and Tosh Masson both came close to extending Quins lead, before Brown claimed his second and the visitors third try of the night. The full back sprinted through a gap in the Irish defence after Quins won possession from a scrum five metres from the Irish line. Jarvis missed the conversion from wide out but was back on target when Brown recorded his hat-trick just before the interval.
A turnover of possession resulted in Mike Worsley releasing Jarvis, who in turn shipped the ball on to Brown. Despite having Amesbury in support, Brown dummied his way past Irish full back Benjamin Reboul before going on to score. Two further tries for Quins followed in first half injury time.
Kiba Richards gathered a perfectly weighted cross-field kick from Jarvis to score in the right hand corner, before Robshaw finished off a sweeping move following good work from Richards and Steve So'oialo. Jarvis converted Robshaw's second try to give Quins their 38-point lead at the break.
No sooner had the second half started then Quins were adding to their tally once again. An excellent break from Duncan James took play deep into Irish territory, where quick ball materialised allowing Kevin Burke to send Jordan Turner-Hall over for what would be Quins final try of the match. Brown took over the kicking duties and the two extra points took his personal tally to 17.
With both sides making a whole host of substitutions the game became a very scrappy affair, though centre Dominic Fea'unati gave the home supporters something to cheer about with a consolation try five minutes from the end.
Final score, 7-45.
