Last Sunday (27th February) saw NEC Harlequins Wanderers take on Worcester Under 19's at Aldershot. With nine first choice players unavailable due to international and Zurich A League duty, it was an opportunity for some players coming though the Elite Player Development Group (EPDG) to get a game in the Quins shirt.
The Wanderers got off to a great start when winger Johny Wehbe scored the first try of the afternoon following some excellent play. The home side then increased their lead with a well struck penalty from fly half Tristan Roberts, before Wehbe struck again in the 25th minute to give Quins an impressive 15-point lead.
However, the Wanderers seemed to relax at this point and allowed Worcester to stay in the game with a converted try straight from the restart. The visitors then managed another converted try and a penalty all before half-time to give them a 17-15 lead at the break.
The second half provided some good rugby but little in the way of scoring opportunities. Worcester added a penalty to their tally to give them a victory by 20-15.
However, this was a closely contested match with some young players showing some real potential for the future. In particular centre Adam Thompstone, fly half Roberts, back row forward Phil Burgess and lock Joe Thomas, who were all making their debut for Quins.
