Saturday (16th April) saw NEC Harlequins Wanderers Under 19's travel down the A316 to Old Deer Park to play their London Welsh counterparts in the semi-final of the England Under 19 Cup. The Wanderers put in a fine performance to book their place in the final with a convincing victory by 35-6.
The Welsh forwards made a strong start, with their scrummage causing Quins a few problems. A penalty awarded to the home side at the set-piece gave the Welsh an early opportunity to open the scoring, with a well struck penalty from their fly half putting them into a 3-0 lead.
Quins responded soon after this, with the powerful young centre Adam Thompstone forcing his way over from close range. Fly half Mike Brown added the two extra points from the conversion. Once again the Welsh number ten added another long range penalty to bring them to within a point of Quins. However, this would be their last score of the afternoon.
Quins pack started to dominate the set-piece and the backs were looking dangerous whenever the ball went wide. Full back Charlie Amesbury scored the visitors second try, which Brown converted, before winger Kiba Richards showed his strength and pace to take the score at half-time to 21-6 in Quins favour, with Brown adding the conversion.
In the second half, two more tries were added to the tally. Firstly, it was the forwards chance to show their dominance with the pack driving over and flanker Darren Clayton claiming the touchdown.
The final score of the afternoon was arguably the Wanderers try of the season with the attack starting with a great run from Richards just outside his own twenty-two. The ball went though numerous pairs of hands before Thompstone finished the move by scoring his second try of the afternoon.
Final score, 6-35.
