Yesterday (Sunday 3rd April) saw NEC Harlequins Wanderers face the Combined Services Under 21 side at Aldershot. The Wanderers had far too much pace for the services and a hat-trick of tries from winger Charlie Amesbury led to an emphatic victory by 53-6.
Flanker Chris Lewis opening the scoring with a well worked try that was converted by captain Luke Cousins. Amesbury then scored his first of the afternoon, which was followed by a fine individual effort by his fellow winger Chuko, with Cousins again adding the conversion.
Combined Services then registered their only score of the first half, with a penalty from their fly half. Next on the score sheet for Quins was Tom Muggridge. George Robson won the lineout and the pack managed to drive the Services over their own line for Muggridge to score.
Centre Nathan Ampofo put though a delightful grubber kick for Amesbury to chase and he managed a great pick-up before grounding the ball in the corner to give Quins a 27-3 lead at half-time.
Amesbury then started the second half as he finished the first and completed his hat-trick. Quins then faced their only set back as flanker Darren Clayton was sin binned and the Services opted to take the three points on offer.
With only 14 players on the pitch, the scoring rate slowed but after Robson and Mike Brown added tries, it was Lewis who completed the scoring in the match.
Final score, 53-6.
