NEC Harlequins hopes of qualifying for the Heineken Cup quarter-finals were ended as they went down against Italian side Treviso. The Italians led 18-16 after a close-fought first half.
Former England captain Will Carling had grabbed the first-half try for Quins, with the remaining points coming from Gareth Rees, who converted the try and landed three penalties. Andrea Sgorlon and Nicola Mazzucato scored tries for Treviso and Pilat contributed 8 points with two penalties and a conversion.
In the second half Daren O'Leary scored a late try as consolation for Quins (converted by Rees) after two Corrado Pilat penalties had proved enough to complete a cup double for the home side.
Quins host a vibrant Cardiff side at The Stoop next week with the visitors needing a win to secure a home berth at the quarter final stage. Unfortunately all that will be at stake for Quins is pride.
