NEC Harlequins scored 41 unanswered points in the second half to record a comprehensive victory over Gloucester by 62-24 in the Zurich A League at the Stoop last night (9th March). The home side scored nine tries, with Matt Moore, Jim Evans and Andy Dunne all scoring two apiece, while Dunne finished the game with a personal tally of 18 points.
Fly half Brad Davies gave the visitors the lead by converting a penalty after six minutes but Quins hit back three minutes later with their first try of the night. Dunne's cross-field kick was taken by Rob Jewell and the winger took play deep into the twenty-two. Dunne was in support to take the scoring pass and race over under the posts unchallenged, presenting himself with the simplest of conversions that put Quins in front 7-3.
As the game entered the second quarter, Jim Evans raced clear to score Quins second try after good work from Matt Moore and Kai Hortsmann down the left flank. Dunne's conversion was soon followed by a wonderful break from the number ten through the midfield. However, his pass went to Gloucester winger Tom Jarvis, who showed great pace to sprint clear of the Quins defence for an excellent solo try in a run that started inside his own twenty-two. Centre Andy Frost added the two extra points to cut the deficit to four points (14-10).
Moore scored his first try ten minutes before the interval, after he collected Dunne's clever chip through the Gloucester defence and Dunne's third conversion of the night put Quins back into an 11-point advantage (21-10). However, Gloucester responded with two tries either side of half-time that took them back into the lead.
Number eight Nick Southern scored in the left hand corner in the final play of the first half and Frost broke through Quins defence immediately after the restart for Gloucester's third try. With Davies converting both scores, the Cherry and Whites were now in front by 24-21.
Quins response was immediate with Dunne converting his second try after he capitalized on a catch and drive from the forwards. With 53 minutes on the clock, Scott Bemand touchdown after Jewell was held-up short of the line. Just prior to this Dunne left the field with an injury, so Adrian Jarvis took over the kicking duties and his successful conversion followed by a penalty made the score 38-24 in Quins favour.
Evans was at the bottom of a rolling maul to claim his second try with 17 minutes left to play and Moore then sprinted clear from the halfway line five minutes later to score Quins seventh try of the match. With Jarvis adding the conversion, it took Quins up to the 50-point mark (50-24).
Jarvis was the next try scorer thanks to being in support of a fantastic break from Mel Deane, which took play into the Gloucester twenty-two. The match closed with Ceri Jones finishing off another catch and drive from the forwards from a lineout five metres from the line, which Jarvis converted to complete the scoring.
Final score, 62-24.
