Following yesterday's (11th March) appointment of Mike Ruddock as the National Coach of Wales, I would like to wish him every success in his new role. He is a talented coach who will undoubtedly lead the management team with distinction over the next few years. During the appointment process, I deliberately chose not to discuss any matters relating to the selection of Steve Hansen's successor. Such decisions need to be made, as far as possible, in a professional and confidential manner.
So far as my position at NEC Harlequins is concerned, I wish to make the following comments.
My application was put forward with the full knowledge of the board at NEC Harlequins. Given my background, I was extremely interested in the post of Wales National Coach and felt that I was a legitimate candidate. I am extremely grateful that the board allowed my name to go forward since contractually I am tied to the club.
Having failed to secure that particular post, I would like to make it clear that I am now concentrating all my efforts on continuing to help drive NEC Harlequins back to the top of the English and European club game.
Speculation surrounding an application such as this one always creates some unease amongst supporters - may I assure them that I do not intend to make a habit of exploring alternative positions. There are exciting times ahead for NEC Harlequins. With six games to play in the Zurich Premiership, we lie fifth in the table which represents steady progress and have a great chance of winning some silverware in the shape of the Parker Pen Challenge Cup. The number of Quins players earning representative honours at age group levels this season shows that the Academy is producing players with excellent potential, which will only help to develop further the strength in-depth within the squad. Furthermore, the development plans we have for the Stoop will present us with new challenges as we seek to make it one of the best rugby grounds in the country.
In such circumstances, I am very much looking forward to remaining at Quins for the foreseeable future.
