The Stoop Memorial Ground, home of NEC Harlequins, will host the inaugural Compass Group International 7's tournament on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th August this year. With New Zealand and Australian legend sides both confirmed participants, as well as the Fiji Barbarians, the two-day competition is set to feature some of the biggest names, past and present, in world rugby.
The global feel will be further enhanced by the presence of the Durban Harlequins from South Africa, a select squad from the USA Pacific Coast and Asian Champions Starbora Orange. In addition to this, the Zurich Premiership will be represented with sides from Quins, Northampton Saints, Saracens and Gloucester, while there will also be a Young England team taking part.
"The tournament has already generated major excitement throughout the sevens circuit and there is no doubt that the Stoop is going to experience two days of top quality rugby," said Andy Hickling, coach of the highly successful Army Sevens team and co-organiser of the Compass Group International 7's. "It is hoped that the event will become a regular fixture in the sevens calendar."
Players who have confirmed their attendance include Fijian legend Waisale Serevei, the star of the New Zealand sevens squad Amasio Valence, England sevens experts Henry Paul (Gloucester) and Ugo Monye (NEC Harlequins), as well as England World Cup winner Ben Cohen (Northampton Saints).
"Everyone within the Compass Group is very excited at the prospect of seeing some of the biggest names in sevens rugby compete at the Stoop this summer," said Peter Harris, Chief Executive ESS Support Services Worldwide of the Compass Group. "We are confident that this will be a very successful tournament and a great way to start a competition that we foresee will grow bigger and better in the future."
With prize money totaling £40,000, spectators can expect to witness two-days of thrilling and competitive sevens rugby.
