The Harlequin Ladies were finally able to break out of their losing streak, when Medway were forced to concede yesterday's (Sunday 5th December) league fixture due to low numbers, writes Jo Everett.
With the league result settled, both teams were keen to play a ten-a-side friendly rather than have a second consecutive week without a game.
Quins kicked off and Medway attacked well, testing the visitors defensive line. It was the home side who opened the scoring, taking the ball out-wide and using their pace to run around the Quins defence for the try.
Quins drew level just minutes later, when scrum-half Donna Tracey picked up from the base of the scrum, before offering support in the move and taking the scoring pass to carry the ball over the line.
Quins scored again before the first of two breaks, with centre Tanya Lee taking the ball wide and sprinting for the try line. The next 15 minutes saw the visitors dominate the game, with three tries in quick succession; a second score apiece for Tracey and Lee, and one from Amy Gibbons at fly half, who broke through the middle with a powerful run.
Medway then came back into the match, tackling hard and stealing possession at the breakdowns. Two tries followed for the home side before the final break, which meant Quins needed to raise their game if they were to hold on to their lead.
The final minutes of the contest saw both sides register one try apiece, as Quins held on for the win by 36-22. After several consecutive losses in recent weeks, this victory was much needed for the Quins Ladies.
However, with league contenders Hove up next for the Ladies at home on Sunday (12th December), the winning feeling may be somewhat short-lived.
