NEC Harlequins maintained their 100% winning record in the Zurich A League this season with a scrappy 8-6 victory over Saracens in a disappointing contest at the Stoop last night (Monday 8th November). Henry Barratt scored the only try of the match in the first quarter, with neither side able to assert any real authority on proceedings throughout the 80 minutes.
Despite Quins dominating the opening exchanges, it was the visitors who put the first points on the board on eight minutes with fly half Ben Russell converting a penalty after Chris Cracknell was penalised for being offside in midfield. Saracens kept up the pressure from the restart only for Quins to take the lead through Barratt's score.
Centre Tosh Masson intercepted the ball after a Saracens attack fell apart in midfield and fed Barratt on the right wing, who kicked downfield. Full back Adam Powell failed to deal with the loose ball for the visitors, allowing Barratt to kick ahead once again and touchdown for a simple try. Adrian Jarvis pushed his conversion attempt across the face of the target but Quins now led by 5-3.
Remarkably, Jarvis then missed a penalty from in front of the posts three minutes into the second quarter but made amends moments later when Saracens were penalised for pulling down a rolling maul. The visitors finished the half the stronger of the two sides but Russell missed the opportunity to cut the deficit to two points, as his penalty drifted wide of the uprights right on the stroke of half-time meaning Quins led 8-3 at the break.
The opening ten minutes after the restart was littered with errors with Jarvis once again missing a fairly straight forward penalty. Russell completed the scoring in the match with 27 minutes left to play with his second penalty of the night, though straight from the restart Jarvis was given the chance to restore Quins five-point advantage but again failed to find the target with his kick at goal.
Despite their slender lead, the home side dominated possession and territory in the final quarter and had their chances to put some daylight between the two sides on the scoreboard. Full back Andy Dunne was at the heart of creating two great scoring opportunities but both Tom Guest and Duncan James were tackled just metres from the line, with Quins then failing to convert the pressure into points.
Final score, 8-6.
