On a damp and grey afternoon on Sunday (7th November), the Harlequin Ladies suffered a defeat by 15-0 against London Welsh in what was their third friendly of the season, writes Katy Strudwick.
After receiving the kick-off, Harlequins drove forward into their opponents half; a determined start but one that was to be short-lived as Quins lost possession in the ruck. London Welsh then exploited gaps in the visitors defence to score the first try of the match after eight minutes.
Quins restarted the game and gave chase, but struggled to organise themselves and form the strong defensive line that has aided them in previous victories this season. Despite some strong running from Laura Quinn and Charlotte Butler, Quins could not keep the ball long enough to make use of the dynamic moves in the backs.
London Welsh again won possession from the rucks and took the ball deep into Quins territory, where they formed a strong driving maul to push forward and over the line to score their second try before the interval.
In the second half, Quins started to put things together with scrum half Amy Wellington and second row Kyra Howell making their presence felt on the pitch and tackles hitting their mark. However, Quins efforts were in vain as the hosts scored a third try to seal their win, having taken advantage throughout the game of the open spaces and sometimes controversial refereeing.
Quins will need to work hard on aspects of their game if they want to overcome their recent loses and win their next league fixture away to Ipswich on Sunday (14th November).
