NEC Harlequins Under 21 XV notched up another emphatic victory, running out 61-11 winners against a spirited Combined Services Under 21 XV on Sunday (4th April).
Following a similar pattern to previous weeks, Quins went behind to an early penalty but began to gather momentum and created chances for the speedy backs. Fly half Ryan Cheal, making his starting debut at this level, was able to move the ball into space for the likes of Monye, Brown, Masson and Okolo to capitalise.
Once again, the pace and power of the young Quins side proved too much for the bigger and older Combined Services players, who were using this game as preparation for their upcoming fixture against England Universities.
As the game wore on, the Quins forwards got in on the act and it was pleasing to see the likes of prop Tom Muggridge and lock Alex Ayling carrying and handling the ball effectively. Scrum half Duncan James was a constant thorn in the Services side and varied play to good effect.
Whilst it was disappointing to allow the opposition to score a try in the closing stages of the game, the Quins side can look forward to next season when many of this crop of players should be aiming to step up to Second XV level.
