NEC Harlequins Second XV, led by captain Luke Sherriff, beat Northampton Saints at Franklins Gardens last night (Tuesday 27th April) by 44-13 to win the inaugural Zurich A League championship with an aggregate score of 72-28 in the final, to cap a fine season for the Second XV.
After a difficult start where Quins found themselves 13-3 behind as a result of a try by Saints full back Oriol Ripoll and two penalties from Shane Drahm, leaving the aggregate lead at just three points, Quins young hero's scored 41 unanswered points and played some outstanding rugby.
Tries by Scott Bemand, Luke Sherriff, Chris Bell (two), and Rob Jewell, backed up by some excellent goal kicking by Adrian Jarvis (three penalties and five conversions).
After struggled in the opening minutes against a bigger Northampton pack, Quins slowly got themselves into the game with three tries in 12 minutes before half-time making the decisive difference. The second effort early in the second half by Bell finished the game off and the Quins took complete control of the final with Jarvis adding two penalties to the scoreline to ensure victory.
The game finished with a bizarre moment as Bell took a quick twenty-two drop out and hammered the ball down field. Jewell, who was probably ten yards offside, sped down the pitch and beat the chasing Saints defenders to the ball to score in the corner, with a huge smile on his face!
At the final whistle the team were presented the trophy by representatives of Premier Rugby in front of 150 joyous Quins supporters who had made the trip up to Franklins Gardens to support the team.
