Orpington based Westcombe Park Rugby Club in association with NEC Harlequins hosted their first Easter Holiday Rugby Academy at their Goddington Dene ground. Led by Nick Hyde, NEC Harlequins Community Development Officer, the course consisted of rugby based activities and coaching backed up by RFU accredited coaching staff.
The camp was a huge success attended by over 80 children who spent two and a half days at Westcombe Park being coached by Westcombe Park and Quins coaches and players and then had a half day trip to the Stoop to meet players, have a tour of the ground and watch Quins defeat Rotherham in the Zurich Premiership.
On Thursday (15th April), Matt Moore and Andy Reay visited the course where they assisted with coaching, sat as panellists as the children asked questions and handed out medals, certificates and signed autographs.
On Friday (16th April), over 150 players and supporters travelled to the Stoop to watch Westcombe Parks Under 9's and Under 10's play in Quins Richmond and Twickenham Times Cup semi-finals. The Under 10's were undefeated with two draws but lost out on points difference. The Under 9's won through with two magnificent victories against Guildford and Reeds to earn a place in the final.
Westcombe Park are fast becoming one of the premier Kent clubs at mini rugby level with at least two teams at every age groupfrom Under 6 to Under 12, and their strategic alliance with Quins has only served to underline the ambition of the club.
