NEC Harlequins Under 19's finished their season with a last gasp try from second row Alex Ayling, dashing the hopes of a physical Bath outfit.
The young Quins side were out of the blocks first, with scrum half Duncan James landing a well struck penalty after five minutes. Bath were quick to respond, kicking a straightforward penalty in front of the posts after Matt Hulland was harshly deemed to have handled in the ruck. Worse for Quins, Hulland was given a yellow card for his sins.
Down to 14 men, Quins defended bravely but conceded at try in the ninth minute of Hulland's break. This try was converted and put Bath 10-3 ahead. By now both teams were playing some good rugby and after a period of pressure before half-time, Mike Brown collected his clever grubber kick to score in the corner. James added the extras from the touchline to make it 10-all at the interval.
A strong start after the break from Quins allowed James to add a further penalty to take the score to 13-10 and with their tails up, the half backs James and Ryan Cheal began to control the game well. The forwards defensive efforts were ably led by Academy players Marlow Warrington-Mattei and Tom Muggeridge, with excellent support from Harry Cripps whose work rate and tackling were Herculean. Bath too played their part and perhaps sensed victory when they scored a converted try three minutes from time to make the score 13 - 17 in their favour.
However, what happened next was very satisfying and is credit to the young men who have trained hard all season. With two minutes left, the forwards won possessionl back and drove the ball down the field for Ayling to dive over in the corner to edge Quins in front 18-17. From the restart, James punted the ball deep into touch, as the referee signalled the end of the game.
Final score, 18 -17.
The Coaches would like to thank the players that have represented the Under 19's this season for all their efforts, as well as our team of Physios and Tim Allen, the Team Manager, for all their help.
