Another Zurich Premiership game, another defeat for NEC Harlequins. An 18-9 victory for Bath at the Recreation Ground meant Quins suffered their seventh league defeat in a row and their tenth defeat of the Premiership campaign this season. Tries from Mike Catt and Dan Lyle helped to give Bath a 12-3 lead inside the opening ten minutes and it was an advantage they never looked like giving up. Once again, Quins relied on Paul Burke to score all their points as the fly half kicked two penalties and a drop goal.
Right from the kick-off, Bath took the game to Quins and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring after just four minutes of play. Quick ball from a lineout allowed scrum half Gareth Cooper to feed Catt, who burst through a gap in the Quins defence before having the pace to round David Slemen and touchdown under the posts. Olly Barkley added the simple conversion to give the home side a seven-point lead.
Quins response was immediate and with Bath penalised for hands in the ruck, Burke converted the opportunity to make the score 7-3. Just three minutes later and Bath scored their second and final try of the match. Good ball from the lineout allowed Catt to send a long miss-pass to Iain Balshaw, who made ground before off-loading to Tom Voyce. The winger took play up into the Quins twenty-two and despite being tackled short of the line, Lyle was in support to pick-up and score in the corner. Barkley failed to convert from the left hand touchline but Bath now led by nine-points, 12-3.
The away side then dominated territory throughout the rest of the half but failed to make any further impression on the scoreboard. Burke failed to convert a penalty attempt after 17 minutes and Matt Perry put-in a try saving tackle on Rob Jewell after he was put clear by Will Greenwood.
Bath fought back and a drop goal from Perry, just four minutes before the interval, increased the home sides lead to 12 points. Ace Tiatia was then sin-binned for throwing a punch right on the stroke of half-time.
Despite being a man down, Quins made a promising start to the second half. Roy Winters, Tony Diprose and Burke all went close to scoring, but Quins had to settle for three points as Bath were guilty of going over the top, with Burke converting the resulting penalty. The visitors then got to within a score of their opponents after 56 minutes. Burke attempted a drop goal which went over off the cross-bar and cut Bath's lead to six-points, 15-9.
The Quins fly half then had the chance to reduce the deficit to three points but failed to convert a difficult penalty opportunity after 62 minutes. Four minutes later and Bath put a crucial amount of daylight between the two sides on the scoreboard when Barkley converted a penalty after Quins were penalised for diving in at the ruck. The rest of the game offered little in terms of scoring opportunities and Bath held-on for their sixth league victory of the season.
Final score, 18-9.
