NEC Harlequins poor away form - no league win in 20 months now - continues as they were narrowly beaten 36-30 by Saracens with a try two minutes into stoppage time by replacement prop Andy Kershaw, following a 35 yard break from Tim Horan.
It was the second such break from the Australian World Cup winner Horan that had led to tries going against Quins. The first of which gave the home team a 15-0 lead after barely 12 minutes, when the 32 year-old centre ran in from over 40 yards with the Quins defence parting like the Red Sea.
An electric start by Saracens had already seen them go ahead through an early Andy Goode penalty, after Kevin Sorrell had made an initial long break that had threatened a score before Quins scrum half Nick Duncombe hauled him down.
Four minutes later and the visitors defence was asleep again as Kyran Bracken took a quick tap penalty and sauntered in for the opening try, with Goode adding the extras.
After Horan had made it more than a point a minute with Saracens second score a Goode penalty saw the home side go even further in front, before Quins finally broke their duck with a penalty from Nathan Williams shortly after the full back had missed a longer range effort.
Saracens restored their 18 point advantage when touch judge David Rose decided that Ben Gollings had acted recklessly in challenging for a 50/50 ball with Sarries full back Adryan Winnan, and Goode added insult to injury by landing the angled penalty.
With Quins still trying to get their bearings Goode's break once again saw the visitors defence part with ease and Richard Haughton was on hand to run in a third try and a 26-3 lead with just over half-an-hour gone on the clock.
Quins were in desperate need of a lifeline now and they managed to grab a vital try seconds before the break when Fijian international Viliame Satala broke deep into the Saracens twenty-two following a rare scrum, before allowing Matt Moore to slide in for the visitors first try despite Horan hanging on to his shirt tails.
Two minutes after the break, Sarries prop David Flatman was binned for deliberately killing the ball at the bottom of a ruck, and Quins quickly prospered. Andre Vos soon went in for his first try for the club and with Williams converting, Quins were now back in the game with plenty of time left on the clock.
Satala then had a try negated for a marginally thrown forward pass as Saracens, down to 14 men, appeared unable to cope with the Quins pressure, and moments later the visitors narrowed the gap further when Duncombe ensured that a catch and drive from a lineout ended in points with Williams adding the extras to make the score 26-22.
Goode landed a penalty from close range but missed another from within his own half, as the home side stayed in front, but nine minutes from time Quins grabbed a fourth try that ensured at least a bonus point after Nick Greenstock, Duncombe and Vos combined to set-up the field position where winger Gollings sent across a perfect cross-field kick for Moore to latch onto and touch down.
Williams was unable to land the conversion that would have tied the match, but with four minutes of the regulation time remaining the home side were penalised for coming in at the wrong side at a maul and the former Stade Francais full back landed the penalty to edge Quins in front.
Unfortunately for the visitors it was not enough, and after Goode tried to fire over a drop goal that was short and wide of the target, Quins were unable to clear their lines and eventually Horan's final charge set-up a ruck close to the Quins line where Kershaw just found enough space to dive over for the match winner that Goode converted.
Final score, 36-30.
