NEC Harlequins ended their Zurich Premiership campaign the way they started it; with a defeat. Despite a 40-11 loss away to Sale Sharks, Quins finished in ninth place in the Premiership table as Saracens and Bath both lost their final match of the season to Bristol Shoguns and London Wasps respectively. The result means that Sale secured second place in the Premiership, 14 points behind Champions Leicester Tigers.
It was Quins who opened the scoring after 17 minutes of play, with Paul Burke converting a penalty. The home sides response was immediate as winger Mark Cueto scored the first of his two tries in the match just two minutes later. Fly half Charlie Hodgson added the conversion to put Sale 7-3 in front, which was the score at half-time.
Five minutes after the restart and Sale registered their second try of the afternoon. Centre Mel Deane powered his way through the Quins defence and scored under the posts. Hodgson made no mistake with the conversion and Sale had an 11-point lead, 14-3.
Quins then got themselves back in contention as a penalty from Mark Mapletoft, on for the injured Paul Burke, and a try from Matt Moore, against his former club, made the score 14-11 in Sale's favour with 25 minutes left to play.
Sale then stepped up a gear and scored four tries and 26 unanswered points in the final quarter. Cueto went over for his second try of the game on 59 minutes, which Hodgson converted. The Sale fly half then secured his side a bonus point when he jinked his way over with 12 minutes left to play. Hodgson added the conversion to make the score 28-11.
Hooker Charl Marais and centre Jos Baxendell scored Sale's fifth and sixth try of the match respectively in the time that remained. Hodgson converted the score by Marais to give him a personal tally of 15 points in the game.
Final score 40-11.
