NEC Harlequins took a major step to securing their Zurich Premiership status with a convincing 40-16 victory over Leeds Tykes in front of a capacity crowd at the Stoop. First half tries from Matt Moore and Will Greenwood gave Quins a 21-9 lead at the interval, while two second half scores from captain Keith Wood, along with a try from Nick Greenstock, sealed the win and the maximum five points. The result puts Quins seven points ahead of Leeds and moves them up to ninth spot in the Premiership table, as Bath and Saracens both lost over the weekend.
Quins Paul Burke and Leeds Braam van Straaten kicked their opening penalties of the match inside the first five minutes to make the score 3-3. Van Straaten then put the visitors in front after six minutes by kicking a penalty from halfway and close to the righthand touchline. As the game entered the second quarter, Burke was taken out by a late and dangerous challenge from Leeds flanker Cameron Mather. Despite being down for a couple of minutes, Burke made no mistake and converted the penalty, though van Straaten's response was immediate as he kicked a drop goal to put Leeds 9-6 in front.
With 24 minutes on the clock, Quins scored the opening try of the game. After a drive up the left from the pack, Greenwood floated a cross-field kick which was brilliantly taken by Moore ahead of his opposite number Shaun Woof. The Quins winger then had a simple run-in for an excellent try. Burke failed to convert but made amends by kicking a drop goal after 37 minutes to put Quins ahead by 14-9.
Right on the stroke of half-time and the home side struck again. Following a catch and drive from the pack, Tony Diprose got the ball out to Greenwood in the centre and he was able to force his way over from close range to score by the posts. Burke added the two extra points and Quins went into the break leading 21-9.
Six minutes after the restart and Leeds flanker Dan Hyde was sent to the sin bin for stamping. With the extra man advantage, Quins registered their third try of the night. Another catch and drive from the pack ended with Wood powering his way through the challenge from van Straaten and over for the five points. Burke converted to give Quins a 19 point lead, 28-9.
Leeds then had their best period of the game and persistent pressure finally resulted in a try for scrum half Scott Benton under the posts, as the game was about to enter the final quarter. Van Straaten added the simple conversion to make the score 28-16.
With 16 minutes left to play, Quins sealed the victory and the bonus point. Fine running from Moore and Rob Jewell took play into the Leeds twenty-two. Matthew Powell chipped the ball to the righthand corner, which bounced into the arms of Greenstock who dived over for his fourth try of the season. Burke failed to convert, but Quins were home and dry leading 33-16.
Quins capped a fine performance when Wood blocked Steve Bachop's grubber kick and then sprinted clear for his second try of the night. Burke completed the scoring by adding the conversion and take Quins up to the 40-point mark.
Final score 40-16.
