Like me, I am sure that you are all enjoying the Football World Cup currently being played in South Korea and Japan. Ireland's performance against Germany on Wednesday was a tremendous effort, and we will all be hoping that England can take heart from this as they prepare to face Argentina on Friday, in what is a crucial game in the ‘group of death'.
On the rugby front, the England Sevens squad containing Pat Sanderson, Ben Gollings and Nick Duncombe reached the final of the World Series Sevens event in Cardiff last weekend, where they lost to New Zealand. I am pleased to report that all the Quins players came through fit and healthy.
The England squad travelling to Argentina met-up earlier this week at The Penny Hill Park Hotel in Bagshot, with our own Alex Codling part of that squad after his tremendous performances for the club in the second half of the season. Alex has worked incredibly hard and deserves this recognition; we wish him every success on the brief trip to Argentina.
This Saturday sees the final of the Zurich Championship; a West Country derby between Gloucester and Bristol. It has been a long hard season for both of these teams, who have done well to keep going into the early weeks on June. Let's hope that the game is a good spectacle for all those supporters travelling to Twickenham to watch and support their respective team.
Behind the scenes at NEC Harlequins, there is still much work going on. Although for some teams the season will not end until this Saturday, for our squad the fitness element of pre-season training will start on Monday. I am sure the boys are looking forward to seeing Paul Pook and Dave Bell again!
At the Stoop, Season Ticket sales continue to grow. As of this morning, over 1,700 Season Ticket applications had been received, of which 30% are from new applicants. If you have not completed your application form yet, then it might be an idea to do so before all the better seats at the Stoop have been taken!
There is a lot of work continuing on the recruitment front. Unfortunately these things do take time, particularly as it is important not just to recruit good players, but also players that will fit into the group. It may be a couple of weeks before any further announcements, although there continues to be much activity in this area, as well as much interest from our supporters.
Finally, returning to the Football World Cup, let me take this opportunity to wish the England squad all the very best for their game against Argentina, and I hope that this will be the start of a good weekend for everyone.
Speak to you next week.
