NEC Harlequins ended this season's Heineken Cup campaign the way they started it; with a victory over Bridgend. A 29-25 win for Quins meant the Welsh club finished bottom of Pool 4, suffering six defeats from the six matches they played. Quins also won the try count by four to three and it was Matt Moore's touchdown with just over 15 minute's left to play that proved to be the decisive score. Despite scoring two early tries in the game, through Rob Jewell and David Slemen, Quins trailed at half-time by 13-17 after conceding two tries in the space of four minutes.
The home side started brightly and put the first points on the board after just a couple of minutes of play. Bridgend were penalised for illegally winning the ball at the ruck and Mark Mapletoft successfully converted the resulting penalty to put Quins three points ahead. From the restart, Mapletoft had a clearance kick charged down and only some desperate defending prevented Bridgend from scoring the opening try of the game. Further pressure from the visitors finally ended with them levelling the score, with fly half Cerith Rees kicking a penalty after Quins were adjudged offside.
With ten minutes on the clock, Jewell put Quins in front once again. Chris Bell intercepted a pass and with quick ball materialising, possession went down the line to Jewell on the left via Mapletoft and Nick Burrows. The winger showed great strength to beat two defenders and score in the corner. Mapletoft failed to convert but Quins now led 8-3. Nine minutes later and Slemen recorded Quins second try of the match. Mapletoft put in a high cross-field kick that Moore expertly guided into Slemen's path. The full back had the pace to beat the covering defence and score in the right hand corner. Mapletoft again failed to add the two extra points on offer but Quins now had a ten-point advantage.
Bridgend hit back straight away and excellent breaks from Gareth Thomas and John Deveraux resulted in a try for flanker Maama Molitika, which Rees converted. Try number two for Bridgend followed immediately as Thomas burst down the left wing into the Quins twenty-two. The winger then completed the move on the right by diving over to score in the corner. Rees added the extra points by converting from wide out and Bridgend now led for the first time in the game, 13-17, with 28 minutes played. Amazingly, Mapletoft failed to find the target with two simple penalty opportunities after 31 and 33 minutes respectively, which meant Quins still trailed by four points at the interval.
With the second half just four minutes old, Quins took the lead once again. Garrick Morgan and Bruce Starr made inroads into the Bridgend defence as Quins continued to recycle possession. Moore was then given some space on the right and he fed Bell on the outside. The young centre cut back inside the defender and scored in the corner for his first try of the season. Slemen took over the kicking duties but he failed to find the target from close to the touchline.
Just four minutes later and Bridgend went back in front. Thomas again broke down the left and fed Rees on the inside, who had the pace to beat Alex Alesbrook in a race to the line. The fly half couldn't convert his own try but the visitors now led 22-18 and it was a lead they extended after 55 minutes. Slemen failed to find touch with a clearance kick that was fielded by Bridgend full back Adrian Durston. He struck a drop goal which sailed between the posts to give the away side a seven-point cushion, 25-18, though this would be Bridgend's last points of the match.
Quins immediately went deep into Bridgend territory and were awarded a penalty. With Slemen being replaced by Ryan O'Neill, it was Mapletoft who again took on the kicking duties and successfully added the three points to the Quins total, to make the score 21-25 as the game entered the final quarter.
Just three minutes later and Moore scored a crucial try. Nick Duncombe, on for Scott Bemand, took a quick tap from a penalty and fed Mapletoft. The fly half spotted acres of space in the Bridgend half and duly kicked deep downfield. Moore showed great pace to sprint past the covering defence, kick the ball into the in-goal area and touchdown to score his fourth try of the season. Mapletoft missed his third conversion of the afternoon but Quins were now in front by a single point, 26-25.
Bridgend were extremely close to taking the lead yet again after 67 minutes. With Quins guilty of being offside, replacement fly half Craig Warlow took the kick at goal but his attempt hit the post and rolled off into touch. Quins worked their way back down field and with Bridgend penalised at the ruck, Mapletoft kicked his third penalty of the game and gave Quins a four-point lead.
Some desperate defending prevented Bridgend from scoring the match-winning try right at the death and Quins held-on for the victory by 29-25.
