NEC Harlequins extended their winning run to four matches and at the same time kept their hopes alive of reaching the knockout stages of the European Challenge Cup thanks to a 37-27 victory over Montpellier at Stade Sabathe. A try from David Strettle right at the death gave the visitors a crucial bonus point, while Adrian Jarvis finished the game with a personal tally of 17 points.
Indeed, it was Jarvis who put Quins into an early lead by converting the first of his three penalties with just two minutes on the clock. A second Jarvis penalty followed eight minutes later, but his opposite number Francois Trinh Duc responded in similar fashion to make the score 3-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Further Quins pressure resulted in Montpellier winger Sebastien Kuzbik being sin-binned, with the resulting penalty being kicked to touch just short of the home sides try line by Jarvis. With possession won at the lineout, the visitors pack drove Aston Croall over for the opening try of the match. A successful conversion from Jarvis opened up a ten-point lead for Quins, only for a second penalty from Trinh Duc to cut the deficit to seven points at the halfway stage (6-13).
Quins extended their advantage six minutes after the restart as an attempted clearance from the hosts was charged down that allowed Will Skinner to pick up and score under the posts. Jarvis made no mistake with the simple conversion to give the visitors a 14-point lead (6-20). However, Montpellier hit back just four minutes later as winger Jacques Boussuge capitalized on the overlap created to score in the left hand corner. Trinh Duc converted from wide out that meant seven points once again separated the two sides on the scoreboard (13-20).
A professional foul then resulted in Ugo Monye receiving a yellow card, before Montpellier full back Olivier Sarramea scored a fantastic solo try in a run that started from the halfway line. Trinh Duc added the two extra points on offer to level the score at 20-20.
Quins hit back almost immediately, with Gavin Duffy making ground deep into the Montpellier twenty-two. The ball popped up to Jarvis, who was able to ease his way through the hosts defence and score under the posts that presented him with an easy conversion and make the score 20-27 going into the final quarter.
The home side fought back yet again and from a scrum five metres from the Quins line, a move down the blind side resulted in Kuzbik diving over for Montpellier's third try of the game. Another excellent touchline conversion from Trinh Duc leveled the match at 27-all with five minutes left on the clock.
A fine break from Strettle took play deep into the Montpellier half, where Quins were awarded a penalty in front of the posts. With Jarvis off the field, Duffy took over the kicking duties and made no mistake in putting Quins back in front (27-30). Then with the game in injury time and the hosts on the attack, Simon Miall stole possession before releasing Strettle who sprinted away for the bonus point touchdown and to put the result beyond doubt. Duffy converted to complete the scoring in the match.
Final score, 27-37.
