NEC Harlequins suffered a third straight defeat in the Guinness Premiership, going down 34-25 against Gloucester at Kingsholm. However, just as in the previous two losses, Quins came away with a bonus point thanks to two tries from Tani Fuga and Mike Brown in the last five minutes, which also gave the scoreboard an air of respectability. The Cherry and Whites also scored four tries, to finish the game with the maximum five points.
The home side opened the scoring with four minutes on the clock and from a Quins mistake. Tani Fuga's lineout throw at a set-piece deep inside the visitors twenty-two failed to find its intended target and the ball fell into the arms of prop Nick Wood, who had a simple run-in close to the line. Full back Willie Walker converted and then kicked a penalty to put Gloucester into a ten-point lead after ten minutes.
The host's excellent start to the game continued just five minutes later when they claimed their second try of the match. After strong work from hooker Olivier Azam, Walker and flanker Andy Hazell combined to release James Bailey, who raced his way past a number of would-be defenders before touching down. Walker added the two extra points on offer to put Gloucester into a 17-0 lead.
Adrian Jarvis opened Quins account with a penalty nine minutes before half-time, before the visitors cut the deficit further by scoring their opening try. Simon Keogh gathered a Jarvis chip through the Gloucester defence and raced away to score in the corner. Jarvis failed to convert from wide out that made the score 17-8.
The Cherry and Whites responded and extended their advantage shortly before the break. Fly half Ryan Lamb gathered a clearance kick from Jarvis before bursting through the Quins defence. Number eight James Forrester was in support and he gratefully accepted the scoring pass for a try that Walker converted, which put Gloucester 24-8 in front at the halfway stage.
Andrew Mehrtens replaced Jarvis at the interval and he was instrumental in putting Quins back in contention three minutes after the restart. A burst from Mehrtens and a clever little pass to Mike Brown resulted in the overlap being created out on the right and a try for Tom Williams. Mehrtens missed the target with his conversion attempt, meaning the deficit was again back to nine points (24-13).
As the game approached the final quarter, Tani Fuga was sin-binned for a dangerous tackle and Gloucester took full advantage of having an extra man. After Walker kicked a penalty, Bailey gathered the restart and fed scrum half Peter Richards, who made a break up the touchline before Alex Brown, Peter Buxton and Mefin Davies added weight to the attack.
With the Quins defence in retreat, a cross-field kick from Lamb found winger Mark Foster who took the catch and claimed the try, and with it a bonus point. Walker's fourth successful conversion put the result beyond doubt, as Gloucester now led 34-13 with 20 minutes left on the clock.
The visitors refused to throw-in the towel and two late tries secured them a bonus point from their afternoons work. With play right on the Gloucester line, Fuga burrowed his way over for the five points before the final play of the game saw Steve So'oialo take a quick tap penalty deep in the Gloucester twenty-two and after his initial break was held-up, Brown was in support to take the scoring pass and touchdown under the posts. Mehrtens converted and this was immediately followed by the final whistle.
Final score, 34-25.
