Quins started well going ahead after just five minutes when they were awarded a penalty, Adrian Jarvis kicked into touch in the corner and off the resulting line out James Percival powered through to score the try. Jarvis slotted the following conversion. 7-0
London Irish came straight back at Quins and the intense rivalry between the two clubs could be seen as frustrations boiled over on a number of occasions. On the one occasion, whilst a number of Harlequins and London Irish players where involved in a fracas in midfield, play continued and Irish took advantage of the space left and used the overlap on the wing to cross the line. Hickey followed up with the conversion. 7 -7 after 17 minutes.
Another melee saw Nicolas Spanghero get ten minutes to cool off in the sin bin and Harlequins did well to withstand continuous pressure with a man down for the final quarter of the first half.
During the second half, any meaningful break by Quins ended in a turnover with handling errors, and lack of discipline giving the ball away. It was the conversion of two penalties in the second half by London Irish's fly half Eoghan Hickey that gave the away side victory.
