Harlequins convincingly won their first game of the Guinness A League campaign, beating Gloucester 59-0 at Imber Court last night (Monday 8th October). Seb Jewell led the way at inside centre scoring 24 points, with two tries and seven conversions over the young Gloucester XV.
Two tries in the opening 15 minutes, both from big pushes from the forwards allowed Will Skinner to touch down twice, paved the way for the home side. The next try came from a moment of individual brilliance, as Ryan Manyika danced his way through the Gloucester defence to score. Seb Jewell slotted home his second conversion of the evening to stretch the lead to 19 points.
Quins continued to put Gloucester under immense pressure and the away side failed to win any ball whether they had the put in or not to any set-piece. Tosh Masson scored the first of this two tries just before half-time, when a switch move with Manyika allowed him to cut through to the Gloucester line. Jewell added the extras to make the score 26-0 at the break.
A new back row for Quins started the second half with George Robson and Tom Sargeant making appearances. The pack continued to dominate and the next try came as result of a rolling maul that gained around 30 yards, before the ball was shipped out and allowed Jewell to power through for the touch down.
Although Quins dominated they did show a lack of discipline and were penalised a number of times for infringements around the rucks. However, Gloucester failed to capitalise on a number of half breaks, with some fine covering tackles from Charlie Amesbury keeping them off the scoreboard.
The home side continued to find gaps in Gloucester's defence and it was Jewell who scored his second, again following a rolling maul and taking a pop pass off Manyika to dive in under the posts. With Jewell adding the two points, Quins now led 38-0.
After Masson claimed his second score of the night, replacement Chris Brooker marked his return from injury with a try, when he received the tap down off his own lineout throw five yards from the Gloucester line. Jewell converted with the final try came in the last minute of the game, with Phil Davies breaking from the back of a scrum and was helped over the line for the score by George Robson.
