The Harlequins squad, which varies in age from 18- 33, includes those who have lived away from home longer than others, and those who have differing disposable incomes. This results in a wide range of eating habits and cooking skills as well as huge appetites- Michel had a job on his hands!
Roux requested assistance from the watching players in preparing and cooking the food. He showed the players how to make two affordable and nutritional meals from scratch. He talked them through many of the processes involved, where to get the ingredients, how to add flavour in a number of different ways and the enjoyment that he gets from pulling all the ingredients together. Once the food was cooked they moved on to a question and answer session which ranged from Michel's inspirations, cooking tips to whether he still partook in fast food!
Luke Wallace, who has had a fast start to the current season said "today was inspirational. I enjoy cooking but it's having the extra confidence to do things in the kitchen to ensure I get the variety I need in my diet. Michel made it look very simple although when I get to do this I may make it look more difficult! I feel I have learnt a great deal, and will take the skills back home!"
Dan Kings, Quins nutritionist, who was in attendance commented: "this compliments everything we are trying to do with the players from a nutritional angle. We can teach them theory and ensure their intake of core foods is there, but a confidence and enjoyment in cooking, for me, is paramount to ensuring that players have a balanced nutritional diet. They do require more than the everyday calorie intake of what we would deem normal, and variety is key as it is in all walks of life."
