A late comeback from Harlequins "A" wasn't enough, as Exeter Braves claimed a 27-20 victory at Sandy Park.
Tries from Tom Williams and Mark Lambert in the last seven minutes set up what looked to be a grand finish; however four earlier tries from Exeter's Phil Dollman, Jack Nowell, Charlie Walker-Blair and Mark Foster proved to be too big a margin for Harlequins A.
It was Quins that started the brightest, as Miles Mantella crossed over the whitewash completing an effective first attack from Quins in the first two minutes. Early line breaks from Rory Clegg, Benjamin Urdapilleta and Tom Casson provided the platform for the winger to score in the far corner. Clegg missed the conversion as Quins took a 5-0 lead.
Exeter then hit back just three minutes later when their centre, Dollman, crossed after finding a hole in the Quins defence. Myles Dorrian missed the conversion and the sides were level after five minutes.
Just three minutes then passed before the home side got more points on the board. With Quins killing the ball in the ruck, this allowed Dorrian to put the newly named Exeter Braves into the lead.
Quins' defending was tested once again after powerful scrums and rolling mauls had the home side camped on Quins' line. The ball was shipped wide on the short side to allow Foster to score in the corner. Dorrian added the points to give the Braves a 15-5 lead on 20 minutes.
Despite many promising attacking spells from the visitors, the momentum was regularly broken down due to handling errors and turnovers. Clegg was able to claw three points back after both kickers missed penalties in the latter stages of the half. As the half time whistle blew, Exeter lead 15-8.
At the change of ends, Quins again started the brighter side as Mantella and Charlie Walker combined well in their own 22 to bring play right onto Exeter's line, however, the attack was broken down after a fumble in attack.
Exeter's Dorrian missed another opportunity on goal, but it wasn't long before the home side added seven points from a well worked move off a set piece. Foster ran a hard inside line from Dorrian who was held just short of the line by Clegg, quick possession was shipped wide and Walker-Blair crossed over. The conversion was missed as Exeter took a 20-8 lead approaching the hour mark.
Jordan Burns (Harlequins EPDG) was brought on to replace Tom Casson and was immediately involved in the action. The winger had to make a try saving tackle from a well worked Exeter attack off a scrum. The young winger was then able to turn defence into attack, making numerous runs down the far touch line and threatening the home side's line.
As Quins began to up the ante, Exeter conceded a penalty seven metres from their line. A quick-tap penalty from Richard Bolt allowed Williams to break through the line to score under the posts. Clegg added the points to bring the scoreboard to 27-15.
Further attacks lead by Walker and Burns, allowed Quins to enjoy possession in the final minutes. Lambert was able to top off a strong final attack with a try at the death. Quins were camped on Exeter's line and after a long pass from Clegg found Walker, the winger offloaded to Lambert who walked in from a short distance to score. Clegg's conversion attempt hit the post as the game finished 27-20 to Exeter Braves.
