Adrian Hayes knows a thing or two about setting huge targets - and achieving them. Something Harlequins Director of Rugby, Conor O'Shea was keen Hayes shared with the reigning Aviva Premiership Champions.
In their constant quest for improvement, O'Shea looked to the Middle East, for a fresh voice to inspire his team's campaign for the 2012-13 season.Drawing on his experiences in the corporate world, adventuring and the military, Hayes led a team development session with the Aviva Premiership Champions in the run up to the start of the new season.
A former Gurkha officer, sales director for airbus and current holder of two Guinness World Records, Hayes, a qualified business coach, designs his programmes for real value - focussing on maximising potential, performance and results. Through consultation and collaboration with O'Shea, Hayes designed a bespoke session focussed on the team's values and missions for the coming season.
Reminding Harlequins of the challenges and scrutiny that come after huge successes, Hayes used his experiences and skills as a coach to guide the team through a series of practical sessions designed to help the squad focus on delivering their objectives and processes and enhancing team communication.
O'Shea, spoke of his motivations behindinvolving Hayes in the teams preparation for the coming season:
"Following the success of last season it was important we looked for different ways of raising the bar - so ,when we heard that Adrian Hayes' mantra was 'Teams exist to achieve results', we were really keen to have him involved. Adrian provided us with a cutting edge team development session focussed on our objectives for the season ahead. We're aiming to go from a good team to a great team and getting the boys together in this type of forum, facilitated by someone with Adrian's experience and credibility was really powerful."
Hayes is well versed in delivering team development sessions, with over 15 years experience with some of the world leading corporates, but his work with Harlequins is his first exposure in the sporting realm.
"I've always wanted to work with sports teams, but until now I've never had the time. I'm used to working with the best in business and so I wanted to work with the best in sport - working with Harlequins has given me that opportunity.
My experiences mean I have an insight into the mental and physical challenges sportspeople are faced with and it was great to bring these experiences to the session.
It was fantastic to see the squad speaking openly and working together during the session. The cross over between team development in sport and business is massive - ultimately teams exist to achieve results and helping them to achieve these results is what I do".
