As part of our on-going charitable partnership with the Household Cavalry Foundation (HCF), we bring the second of our stories showcasing the excellent work the charity does to help our injured servicemen, women and horses.
Dan Abbott is currently the Squadron Quartermaster Corporal of HQ Squadron at the Household Cavalry Regiment in Combermere.
He joined the Regiment in 1993 and achieved his Household Cavalry Riding Instructor qualification soon after. In 2000, Dan moved to the HCR at Windsor and served in Bosnia with 'A' Squadron, The Life Guards in 2001, Iraq in 2003 on Operation TELLIC with 'D' Squadron, The Blues and Royals and again in Iraq on Operation TELLIC 10 where as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) he was awarded a commendation by the GOC. In 2010 he served in Afghanistan on Operation HERRICK 11 again as a FAC.
Dan wanted to show his support for the HCF by competing in an endurance event each month, raising money and the profile of the HCF and the Regiment. The events he participates in range from 10km runs through London to the gruelling Ice Man Challenge.
The HCF are funding all of Dan's entry fees and have helped source him sponsorship from Cotswold Clothing for his running shoes and vests.
Speaking of his support for the HCF, Abbott said: "When I served on Operation TELLIC in 2003 we lost a few friends out there. The Regiment is about to deploy on Herrick 18 to Afghanistan and that is why I am supporting the HCF because they support our casualties and Veterans"
