His prowess on the rugby pitch earned him three Blues, the last one in 1962 when he captained Oxford. While he was at Oxford, he also was awarded six caps for Scotland and played in what was then the Five Nations Championship.
After his graduation, Mr McPartlin took up a teaching post at St Edward's School in Oxford where he remained until he retired passing on his passion for the game to generations of students.
From his base in Oxford Mr McPartlin joined Harlequins and contributed greatly to the club both on and off the pitch during the 1960s. He also represented Oxford, Oxfordshire, Surrey, the Army and the Barbarians in a distinguished playing career before going on to take up refereeing.
He was an entertaining after dinner speaker and raconteur who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Harlequins extends its sincere sympathy to Mr McPartlin's family and friends.
Mr McPartlin's funeral will take place at 2.00pm on Thursday 7th November at the Oxford Oratory, 25 Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6HA, and will be followed by the Wake at the OURFC Pavilion on Iffley Road, Oxford.
