Injury Basics: PRICER
If you have a soft tissue injury such as a bang, sprain or muscle strain the correct immediate first aid can prevent complications and speed up the recovery process.
The PRICER protocol will relieve pain limit swelling and prevent further injury
P - Protect yourself from further injury - stop playing!
R - Rest allows the injury time to fully heal.
I - Ice will reduce pain and inflammation. Apply an ice pack (frozen peas are best) for 20mins every hour (20min icing 40min off & repeat). Never apply ice directly to skin as it can burn. Wrap the ice pack/peas in a damp towel.
C - Compression will also help to reduce inflammation and swelling. Tubagrip or stretchy bandage will suffice.
E - Elevate the affected limb above the heart to help reduce inflammation.
R - Refer & Rehabilitate. Ensure injuries are assessed by a medical professional and only return to sport when appropriately rehabilitated.
