Try Learning @ The Twickenham Stoop

Try Learning @ the Twickenham Stoop is an exciting new venture under the PfS initiative and will be located within the Jason Leonard Suite.

The Playing for Success (PfS) initiative is a partnership between the Government (DCSF), Local Education Authorities and Professional Sports Clubs, whereby Study Centres have been set up to allow students to learn after school and during the holidays.

Research about PfS has shown that these Centres offer quality study support and are an excellent, cost-effective means of raising standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT as well as improving student motivation and encouraging positive attitudes to independent learning.

It will comprise the following features:

  • The Centre will target pupils aged between 10 and 14 providing a total of 20 hours study support per group of 15 students.
  • The education provision will be free of charge
  • The curriculum will involve themed activities connected to rugby but underpinned by numeracy and literacy objectives. However, other curriculum areas can be integrated too ' PHSE, active and healthy lifestyles etc.
  • The activities will be supported by state of the art ICT equipment including lap tops, an interactive whiteboard and digital cameras.
  • The teaching will be led by the centre teacher and centre manager but supported by a range of volunteer assistants who will be recruited from a variety of sources including college and school 6th forms, St Mary's University college and local businesses.
  • Piloting will start after February half term 08 with a view to running full time from the start of the summer term 08
