Harlequins travelled to Cinch Stadium at Franklins Gardens to face Loughborough Lightning in the second round of the Allianz Premier 15s Season.

The physical battle saw Quins finish on top with a last minute Izzy Mayhew try cementing the win for the visitors, as they return home 15-24 victors.

Quins started strong with some physical carries up front, with the first of four tries coming from the foundations of a lineout drive, which would become a powerful weapon for Amy Turner’s side throughout the afternoon. Earning a penalty from a rolling maul, Emma Swords took the quick tap, and a few phases later Scotland International Jade Konkel-Roberts crossed the whitewash in her first appearance since the Rugby World Cup on nine minutes.

Physicality in defence remained a prominent theme of Harlequins’ first half performance, with some huge hits from Lagi Tuima and Izzy Mayhew coming in on their opposite numbers, extinguishing Loughborough’s attack.

Both sides brought power in the scrum, but it was a penalty to Loughborough on 33 minutes for a Harlequins infringement which gave the home side their first points of the afternoon, with replacement Helen Nelson stepping up and adding the three.

Another Quins driving maul saw new signing Bryony Cleall go over for her second try in as many games, peeling off the maul and dotting down, with Bella McKenzie adding the extras to give Quins a nine-point lead going in at the break.

The second half started similarly to the first, with Quins showing their physical dominance, pinning Loughborough back into their 22. Quins battled through the phases and tried to exploit the space out wide, but ultimately it was Australian international Kaitlan Leaney who got Quins’ third try under the posts. Converted by her fellow Wallaroo Bella McKenzie to make the score 3-19 on 43 minutes.

A period of intense pressure from Loughborough saw Quins’ Emma Swords and Bryony Cleall sent to the bin for 10 minutes, leaving the visitors with 13 players. Loughborough pounced and spread the ball wide to exploit the space, scoring through Georgie Lingham making the score 8-19.

Harlequins showed great resolve in defence, and kept Loughborough out for the remainder of the sin bin periods. It wasn’t until the 75th minute that the home side managed to break through the Quins wall, with a second try for Georgie Lingham, converted by Helen Nelson bringing Loughborough to within four points.

A last minute try for half-centurion Izzy Mayhew cemented Quins’ first win of the 22/23 Allianz Premier 15s season. With no way through the purple wall up front, they spread it wide and Mayhew crossed in the corner in the final play of the match.

Harlequins welcome Saracens to The Stoop next Saturday (3rd December) in what promises to be another huge London derby.
