Head Coach Gerard Mullen is proud of his sides victory over Loughborough Lightning
Harlequins Women Head Coach Gerard Mullen was proud of his sides performance as Quins began their title defence with a 50-15 victory over Loughborough Lightning at a scorching Twickenham Stoop.
“I think in the first half we seemed to still be in pre-season mode a little bit. We weren’t clicking in the final third of the pitch, so we need to work on being more clinical going forward.
“We went into half-time with a lead, but I thought the team reacted superbly after the break and played some incredible rugby throughout the second half. An example of that was the try off a lineout turnover in our own 22, the ball eventually finding its way to Heather on the far side after some great handling from the backs allowing Hev [Cowell] to do what she does best so overall I was very pleased with our performance.”
There were a number of Quins debutants in the matchday squad as Rosie Galligan, Ellie Kildunne and Beth Blacklock all ran out at The Stoop for the first time in the Famous Quarters.
Mullen said: I think those players delivered what was asked of them pre-game. They have all settled in really well and feel at home here at Quins, so I expect them to develop into great players in the near future.”
The Harlequins Women Head Coach knows there is still lots areas where his side can improve going into Saturday’s clash with Worcester Warriors at Sixways Stadium.
“I would still love to see a bit more aggression in our defence, there were a couple of set pieces which could have been a bit tidier and I feel we need to get that ruck right in attack as well”
Harlequins Women’s next game at The Stoop takes place on Saturday September 18 at 15:00 against Exeter Chiefs Women.
