English Rugby Union team, Harlequins, and Wealth Management Company, Charles Stanley, commission independent player education report - The State of Play

To coincide with the two-year partnership between English Premiership Rugby Union club, Harlequins, and Charles Stanley, a wealth management company who act as their Official Player Welfare Partner - and following Harlequins’ victory over Exeter Chiefs in the 2020/2021 Premiership Rugby Final on Saturday - the pair have commissioned an independent Player Education Report – The State of Play.

The topic of transitioning from a career as a professional athlete to life after sport has received increasing attention and debate in recent years, however research pertaining specifically to rugby union is somewhat limited. Further to that, few studies have conjoined the interdependent relationship between transitioning, education, and well-being, which this report endeavours to do.

The core purpose of this exclusive report is to shine a light on the current pressures facing professional rugby players as they come to terms with transitioning to life after rugby, while also reviewing the current support available to them.

More specifically, this report hopes to signify, and bring further attention to, the importance of player education, welfare and transitioning, highlighting areas where substantial progress has been made as well as areas that still need improvement.

In producing the report, a series of 30-minute video conference interviews with 10 past and present Harlequins players took place during March 2021. All participants had unique personal circumstances and thus had different views and experiences to report which helped generate a diverse range of responses.

The results gathered from the participants emphasize the need for clubs, like Harlequins, to continue developing personal relationships with players outside of a rugby and performance-focused setting, as well as the need to adopt a more holistic approach to professional development which is more nurturing and accommodating of player’s interests outside the game, helping to ensure a smoother transitioning process.

Speaking about the report, Laurie Dalrymple, Harlequins CEO said, “As a Club we have a real desire to constantly progress in everything we’re doing, both on and off the pitch. This report has enabled us to investigate a challenging issue for us in players transitioning out of the Club. We strive to learn and improve in everything we do, and this area of player welfare is no different. We know this is how we will continue to be successful, and we are delighted that we have a Partner in Charles Stanley that are there to support us in our journey.”

Commenting on the partnership, Paul Abberley, Charles Stanley CEO said: "The State of Play report looks at player welfare through a holistic lens, taking into account the unique experiences of individual players and all aspects of life after rugby. The Harlequins' focus on their people aligns with our ethos as a wealth manager, where we always endeavour to gain as full a picture as possible of our clients' lives and circumstances in order to achieve the best possible outcomes when helping them secure their financial future."
