Marler returns for Irish derby

Friday, 26th November 2021 @ 12:00

Harlequins' coaching group have named a much-changed matchday 23 to host London Irish at The Stoop this Saturday

An entirely new Starting XV this weekend sees six internationals make their return to the starting line-up, with England prop Joe Marler returning alongside fellow English internationals Danny Care and Will Collier, Springbok pair Stephan Lewies and Andre Esterhuizen and Italian standoff Tommy Allan.

Alongside four players that started in Quins' Premiership Cup win over Northampton Saints last weekend, Tongan international Viliami Taulani is named amongst the Impact Players after making his full Club debut last weekend.

Four Harlequins Academy players will feature for the men in the Famous Quarters on Saturday, with Jack Kenningham and Oscar Beard set to take to the field from the first whistle, joined from the bench by Impact Players Jack Musk and Hugh Tizard.

Previewing the fixture, Senior Coach Tabai Matson said: "London Irish and what they're going to bring on Saturday is going to bring us back into the groove of Premiership action this week. We're mindful that you can't make assumptions of where you left off.

"Clearly, people have been on various different paths over the last couple of weeks, and the England players for the last month. And so this is a pretty critical game in terms of getting back into our cohesive game plan.

"I'm still new here, but one of these things that I've learned is just how big of a London derby this match is for us. Our captain spoke in the week about how we know Irish are going to target this game, and we know it's going to be a tough one. Not just because it's the first game back, but because it's a London derby. It's great for me because I'm new here, but I'm learning all these rivalries and legacies and London Irish is one of those."
