Harlequins’ affiliate programme started in 1906 when the club formed an official allegiance with Pretoria Harlequins. Since then Harlequins has gone on to form official partnerships with seven other clubs including Melbourne Harlequins in 1928, Hobart Harlequins in 1934, New Zealand Harlequins in Hamilton in 1938, Kenya Harlequins in 1952, Dallas Harlequins in Texas, USA in 1983, Future Hope Harlequins in Kolkata, India in 2004 and most recently Abu Dhabi Harlequins in 2008.
We work closely with all eight clubs offering levels of coaching support – most recently the club ran a community coaching camp in Abu Dhabi. We also offer lines of progression for elite players and we included Jeremy Manning from Abu Dhabi Harlequins and Patrice Agunda from Kenya Harlequins in our squad for the World Club 7s in August 2013.
Moving forwards, the aim is to develop the Harlequins style of play throughout all of our affiliate clubs through in-depth coaching workshops and opportunities to offer rugby to as many people as possible globally. We are working towards growing women’s rugby and further deepening our partnership with wheelchair rugby.
A number of global events, including the Rugby World Cup in England in 2015 and the inclusion of sevens in the Rio Olympics in 2016 provide the perfect opportunity to leverage our partnerships and extend Harlequins global associations.
